Nursery

Today I went to the nursery at Grace church to help out. I almost didn't but I reminded myself of how badly understaffed the class sometimes is. I went to teacher Latania, and she told me to go find two more people from Crossroads ministry to help... so back to the gym in search of people.

First I asked a small group of people. Maybe 3 or 4 girls/guys. "Do any of you guys want to help with nursery? I need two people." They all responded with these blank stares (and didn't even say "no thanks"). I moved on. A group of five or six soph girls, I asked the same question. This time I got awkward, uncomfortable stares. One girl said "I didn't go to crossroads last week so I want to stay." The others didn't say anything. "Ok, whatever," I said quitely as I scanned for someone to ask.

I asked this weird big guy called Kevin Lee as he was getting doughnuts. Then I asked this funny small girl called Sarah. "Do you like kids?" I said. "Yeah I love kids." Got my two helpers. "Can I go get a doughnut first?" said Sarah.

As I was leaving, one of the girls from the first group asked if I had found people, "A" for effort I guess. Now the correct response would be for me to be understanding and realize that everyone is different and not everyone likes kids, but I seriously was pretty upset. I was asking them to help out with a church ministry. Let's say it was something as simple as stacking chairs at the end of service. Can you imagine asking your friends to help stack chairs and have them respond to you with uncomfortable stares? I should be understanding, but I have lost a certain amount of respect for those sisters! I don't understand how you could serve the campus fellowship, go on Short term missions (and some of them are), but not care about helping the church nursery. Isn't that unsettling? A few mind boggling realizations:

-some of the sisters who I considered very spiritually mature are not perfect (also, evidently not all girls like children)
-Children, the "least of these," are overlooked for more fulfilling avenues of church service. Yes, in the nursery you are herding a bunch of 3 year old brats. Gotta care and raise them up as Jesus commanded!

These are the reasons I think people don't want to nurse the children:
1) lack of fraternizing with friends
2) not being able to worship and hear the message (being fed)
3) don't like children

I don't think any of those are good reasons. Reason 2 depends on the circumstance. It's also very weak because MacArther preaches in 1st service.

Thanks Kevin and Sarah.

I don't understand why some Christians don't act like adults for goodness sake.
